A Collective Dream

THE NEW LIFE

We knew we had a good film, but one always loves his own child more than others do. After three years of hard work feeding and raising BLACK BREAD, the time came to crank up the projector and let the film be seen. Now it was audience's turn to judge it, and we're happy to report that everyone from movie audiences to critics, festival juries and Spanish Academy members gave it high marks, higher than any filmmaker could ever hope for, even given such an intense story so beautifully rendered into moving pictures.

BLACK BREAD's new life began at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, when Nora Navas was awarded the Silver Seashell for Best Actress. That was where the cast and director, Agustí Villaronga, recieved their first major award and their first of many rounds of applause.

Not only was BLACK BREAD showered with awards, it broke several records: becoming the third most awarded film in the history of the Goyas, the first Catalan language film to both win the Best Picture Goya Award and to be put forward as Spain's official entry for the foreign language Oscar at the Academy Awards, competing against Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In and Zambrano's The Sleeping Voice.

Agustí Villaronga was already a renowned director and screenwriter with a long career in cinema. But not until BLACK BREAD was he awarded the National Film Prize (Premio Nacional de Cinematografia), whose previous winners include Javier Bardem, Alberto Iglesias and Pedro Almodóvar.
BLACK BREAD has crossed national borders. However, its essence is kept, our child DNA's has not changed: the story, the talently played characters and the message remains the same. The grown-ups' war was over. His was just beginning...
